FARMERS TAKE UP COMMERCIAL ORCHID FARMING

Makwanpur, May 26: Lured by lucrative income, farmers in northern Makwanpur have taken up commercial farming of orchids.

Farmers of Bajrabarahi-8 have established nurseries for bringing up plants of the brightly coloured beautiful flower.

Commercial orchid farming was started after the United Nations Development Programme offered support, said a local, Hari Sharan Bidari, who is among dozens others taking up orchid farming as one of the sources of livelihood.

Farmers associated with Jaleshwor, Rishewor and Kalikadevi groups at Bajrabarahi earned the know-how about orchid farming after visiting Orchid Firm and Himalaya Flora Firm in Lalitpur. They also made a field visit of various stalls runs by Teku-based Flower Entrepreneurs’ Association and Tirpureshwor-based Flower Collection Centre.

Orchid growers are now searching for markets to sell their produce. They are also maintaining the beauty of jungles where orchid flowers grow, said Secretary of Bjrabarahi VDC, Kedar Bahadur Joshi. RSS
