Kathmandu, May 27: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav today urged the three major political parties to forge consensus at any cost.

A day before the CA term expires, the President met top leaders of the three major political parties – UCPN-Maoist, NC and UML – at his office this morning and urged them to reach consensus to end the political deadlock.

NC Acting president Sushil Koirala told journalists that the President urged them to reach agreement to protect national integrity and dignity.

Koirala said Maoists are mainly responsible to extend the CA term and that talks are on with the three parties to reach a package deal.

The President had called Koirala, UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal for discussion on the political deadlock, CA term and impending crisis if the CA term is not extended by tomorrow.

Khanal said the three leaders briefed the President on the latest political situation and their respective party’s views. He said the meeting with the president has opened doors for forging consensus.

Khanal said the President urged them to end impasse by extending CA term.

In the hour-long meeting, the leaders informed the president about the ongoing talks among the parties and the points of the proposed package deal.

Maoist chair Dahal said talks and discussions are on to forge consensus. He refused to make further comments.

On a question whether the prime minister will resign before extending CA tenure, NC leader Koirala said the prime minister will not resign immediately. “There is nothing like the prime minister’s resignation right now,” he said.

Khanal said the responsibility is on the shoulders of three major parties and expressed hopes that they will be able to show great skills and capacity to end the deadlock. RSS
