TWO KILLED IN POLICE-ARMY OPERATION VS. BOMBING SUSPECT IN S.PHILIPPINES

DAVAO CITY, Philippines, May 28 (Xinhua) A soldier and a suspected bomber were killed in a shootout in southern Philippines on Thursday, police on Friday said.

The soldier, Sgt. Romy Apostol, and the suspect, Edris Sabal died during the incident in Sultan Kudarat town, in Mindanao's Maguindanao province, Senior Superintendent Alex Lineses, provincial police chief said.

Apostol and several army troops from the military's Task Force Tugis (Hunt) and policemen from the nearby Cotabato City were about to serve the arrest warrant against Edris at Simuay village when the suspect resisted and fought with the arresting team, Lineses said. "He was about to be arrested when he fired at the (arresting team). He was killed, but a soldier also died," Lineses told Xinhua by phone.
Edris was facing murder charges in connection with his alleged participation in some of the deadly bomb attacks in the region several years back.

The suspect's wife as well as a policeman were hurt during the shootout, Lineses said, adding that troops were able to recover from the slain suspect two pistols, several rounds of ammunition and bomb-making components.
